The Hamilton Science Fellowship Programme

Bringing new scientific ideas, expertise and inspiration to Dulwich College

The Hamilton Science Fellowship Programme is a new donor-funded initiative at Dulwich College, created to bring an exceptional early-career scientist or engineer into the College for an academic year.

The Fellowship offers a talented recent graduate the opportunity to develop their own scientific interests and ideas while becoming part of the life of Dulwich College. At the same time, it will give our pupils even more opportunities to explore science beyond the curriculum, to be inspired by someone at an early stage of their own scientific journey, and to discover just how exciting science can be.

The Fellowship has been made possible through philanthropic support from the family of Dr Anthony Hamilton OA, whose generosity is creating an opportunity for a recent graduate to develop their own scientific interests while making a lasting contribution to the lives of Dulwich pupils.

Investing in the next generation of scientists

Science at Dulwich is already a thriving part of College life. Alongside a strong academic curriculum, pupils take part in clubs, societies, competitions, lectures and academic extension, with opportunities to explore all the wider sciences well beyond the classroom.

The Scientist in Residence will complement this work by bringing their own enthusiasm, curiosity and interests to the College. Working primarily with the Physics Department, they will contribute to enrichment activities, support clubs and competitions, mentor pupils and develop new opportunities for young people to engage with science.

The Fellowship is equally an investment in the individual who takes it up. For an exceptional recent graduate, it offers a distinctive year in which to develop their own scientific interests, lead a substantial project and gain experience in science communication, working with young people, leadership and project management.

With the support of experienced teachers and the wider College community, the Scientist in Residence will have the freedom to shape the role around their own interests and ambitions. Whether their next step is postgraduate study, research, engineering, industry, education or another field, the experience will provide an opportunity to grow professionally while making a meaningful contribution to the scientific life of the College.

“We are delighted to be launching the Hamilton Science Fellowship. It offers a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic young scientist to develop their own ideas and interests while become part of our ambitious Physics Department. They will bring their enthusiasm and curiosity to College life, helping us to give pupils even more opportunities to explore science beyond the curriculum and discover just how exciting it can be. We are really looking forward to seeing what they create.” Rosemary Sym, Assistant Head Academic

The power of philanthropy: creating a lasting legacy

The Hamilton Science Fellowship has been created in collaboration with the Hamilton Family, whose generosity is providing funding for the Fellowship for its first three years.

This partnership is creating an opportunity that goes beyond funding a single appointment. It enables Dulwich College to give a talented early-career scientist or engineer the space to develop their own interests and ideas, while bringing additional opportunities for our pupils to explore science beyond the curriculum and discover where their own curiosity might take them.

A distinctive part of the Fellowship is the opportunity for each Scientist in Residence to conceive and lead a project of their own. This might be a new astronomy or robotics programme, an engineering challenge, a research project, a competition or an entirely new way for pupils to engage with science.

The Hamilton Family's support gives the Fellowship time to establish and develop its impact. Over the initial three years, we hope to see new ideas take root, new opportunities emerge and a lasting contribution made to the scientific life of the College.

We are most grateful for the investment in the programme and in the future generation of Dulwich pupils.
