Dulwich College has a proud and distinguished Rugby tradition dating back to our first fixture versus City of London School in 1859 with our famous ‘black and blue’ jersey first appearing in 1873. Rugby is the major sport in the Michaelmas term and the College is incredibly proud of each of its forty rugby teams, from the U8F squad through to the 1st XV. Each year over four hundred fixtures take place against the top rugby playing schools in the country, undoubtedly challenging our boys on the strongest of fixture lists.

We see that our boys’ participation in Rugby undoubtedly develops desirable personal qualities and skills that transcend sport, into the everyday life of a child so that they can fulfil their potential as young men. Rugby is unique in that it encourages and cultivates an individual’s ability to work in a team, their courage, resilience, character, leadership, respect and discipline, whilst also teaching young men how to win with humility and lose with grace.

We aim to cultivate the most enjoyable and safest environment possible, where each individual can fulfil their potential and develop their own core skills, maximising their personal development, whilst learning to become a team player in our great game. We are committed to ensuring that each team, no matter their level, has excellent provision from an outstanding group of truly knowledgeable staff, allowing every boy to participate at the appropriate level and take pride in representing his school.

At Dulwich, boys will have the opportunity to join a Rugby tour in Year 6, Year 10 and in the Upper School biennially to continue our fine tradition of touring. Dulwich rugby began touring in 1903 with a trip to Ecole Albert le Grand in Paris and continuing in 2016; the U15’s visited Biarritz, and the 1st XV toured South Africa. The opportunity to tour as a group is a fantastic way to prepare for a forthcoming season, as well as build firm bonds and create memories of a lifetime. Previous tours have included trips to Australia, New Zealand, America and Canada.

In our 158-year history, the College has produced many outstanding individuals; British & Irish Lions, over thirty full Internationals, numerous Oxford and Cambridge Blues, as well as current professionals playing in the Premiership, Top 14, Pro12 and Super Rugby. As boys move through the school, our leading players have further access to supplementary strength and conditioning sessions, video analysis, personalised programs and individual player development plans.

Representative Rugby is fully encouraged and supported and we continually have boys excelling in the Saracens and Harlequins Academy, with whom we have excellent links, as well as County teams, Exiles and LAMB’s sides.

We have enviable facilities in the heart of Dulwich, chosen as an official team base during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, hosting the Australian and Romanian teams. Additionally we provide physiotherapy support for our senior teams and pitch side medical staff on all rugby-playing sites.

Dulwich Rugby has enjoyed an incredible run of success in recent years; U13 National Cup Winners (2012), U13 Rosslyn Park 7’s Winners (2013), St Joseph’s Festival winners (2012), ‘Rugby World’ School Team of the Year (2013), three consecutive Daily Mail/NatWest Cup wins (2012-2014).
