Model United Nations

Model United Nations

Shortly before the end of Lent term, our Model UN delegates spent three days at the London School of Economics for the annual YouthMUN conference. This is one of the UK's largest Model UN conferences for secondary schools, entirely organised and chaired by undergraduates from the LSE and other leading universities.

Our 12 delegates enjoyed three days of intense negotiations across a range of committees - from a reenactment of NATO's treatment of the 1974 Cyprus Crisis to a feisty simulation of the current House of Commons in which the Labour Government was ousted by a Conservative/Reform alliance led (somewhat surprisingly) by Jeremy Corbyn.

Congratulations to the following award winners, whose achievements are especially impressive considering that the conference involved 570 delegates from 30 different schools:

  • James Weir (Year 10) - highly commended (for his role as Democrat Senator Jeff Merkley in the US Senate simulation)
  • Daniel Gorr (Year 12) - highly commended (Military Crisis Committee)
  • Vikram Kochhar (Year 11) and Keeran Millar (Year 11) - best delegates (BRICS)

One of the most exciting recent developments of the College's MUN programme is our new programme of collaboration with SSLP partner schools. After hosting the inaugural event at the College in Michaelmas term, we have participated in conferences at JAGS in Lent Term and Charter North (their first ever MUN conference) in Summer Term.

Numerous Dulwich students won highly commended or best delegate awards at both JAGS and Charter North, including Alexander Zhang (Year 12) and David Agyemang (Year 12) who both won best delegate awards at only their second ever MUN conference. More importantly, however, delegates have greatly enjoyed negotiating and bonding with students from different partner schools.

We have one more event left this season - a new Saturday conference at Godolphin and Latymer in June - before launching a busy programme under a new secretariat next year.
