Mathematics visit to Williams F1

Mathematics visit to Williams F1

59 Pupils from Year 7, 8 & 9 alongside 9 pupils from City Heights recently made an exciting STEM focused trip to the Williams Formula One Team’s Headquarters in Oxfordshire. Students had the opportunity to undertake a design and build challenge to create their own Formula One car nose cone and then most excitingly, test it in a custom rig. They then refined their builds before presenting as a team and comparing scores. Students worked really well in mixed year group teams learning about crumple zones and balancing safety and performance.

In the afternoon students were rewarded with a tour of the Williams museum, seeing over 50 years of the team’s history in over £200m worth of cars. Nigel Mansell’s FW14B championship winning car was a highlight and getting to hold a carbon fibre part of last year’s car was a great photo stop. The day finished with some ultra-competitive racing in the team’s E-Sports lounge, where the students were able to race on next week’s Imola circuit before battling the rain on Monaco’s challenging streets.

Many thanks to the Williams STEM team for hosting us.
