Gabrieli Roar

Dulwich College, JAGS and Alleyn’s Music Departments were delighted to be working in partnership with Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort to bring an exciting project to the Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership this half term.

The culmination of this was on Tuesday 14 October in St George’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Southwark where singers from 11 Southwark secondary schools formed a chorus of 200 pupils to perform Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas.  Accompanied by an orchestra of period instruments (from the 1600s) the older pupils sang a number of the opera choruses with the Gabrieli Consort singers, whilst the year 7-9 singers sang folk songs and sea shanties interpolated into the opera plot. 

Expert vocal coaching was provided in the schools over the first half of the term and a day of rehearsals with the professional singers and musicians drew everything together in a performance in front of an audience of over 400.
