On Saturday 4 October, nine Dulwich delegates took part in our first Model UN event of the season: the highly popular annual national conference run by our neighbours, Alleyn's, who welcomed 170 delegates from schools across England. Our nine delegates represented Russia and Egypt in a variety of committees - from the Security Council reviewing conflict in Lebanon to the Human Rights Council debating freedom of the press in authoritarian regimes.
All our delegates enjoyed a stimulating day of debates with students from other schools, and the following deserve particular congratulations for winning prizes in their respective committees:
-
Misha: commended (SPECPOL)
-
Keeran: highly commended (DISEC)
-
Philipp: highly commended (Arab Peace and Security Council) in his first ever conference
-
D-J : best delegate (UN Commission on African Development)
-
David : best delegate (Human Rights Council)
-
Daniel: best delegate (Security Council)
Following their courageous performance in a hectic General Assembly emergency debate, our Egypt representatives (Flynn, Alexander, D-J and Johnson) won the prize for the best delegation in the whole conference - meaning that every Dulwich delegate won at least one prize.
This is a remarkable achievement, as the majority of our Egypt delegates had never attended an external conference before. This is the second year in a row that Dulwich has won the prize for best delegation in the conference.
We look forward to resuming the Model UN programme in the second half of term - hosting local schools at our own after-school mini-conference in November, and attending an external conference at London Oratory School.
