The Great Hall Concert on 21 May was a musical celebration of summer and a real chance for our emerging musicians in the Junior, Lower and Middle School, supported by some of our Year 12 musicians, to shine. Junior Orchestra opened the concert with spirited performances of the William Tell Overture and The Muppets theme. Concert Band’s performance of Aztec Fire and Pixar Movie Favourites raised the energy levels before the Brass Band played Lincolnshire Posy, capturing the lyrical side of this lovely English folksong suite.
The spotlight shone on six Lower and Middle School soloists as part of the Alan Morgan String Orchestra. Orfeas Karavas (violin), Andrew Hamilton (harp) and Raymond Zi (cello) featured as the solo trio in Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves followed by a quartet of Orfeas Karavas, JJ Kwok, Lochie Chesney (violins) and Sebastian Soegianto (cello) in Vivaldi’s Spring. The string playing from Alan Morgan was rich, warm and rhythmically assured. The full Alan Morgan Orchestra joined together in a joyous performance of the 4th Movement of Mendelssohn’s 5th Symphony, ending with Honor, Laud and Rejoice. The concert closed with a toe-tapping set from Other Big Band.
It is very exciting to see and hear such strong playing in the Junior, Lower and Middle Schools across all the instrumental families. With over 100 boys performing and an audience of over 200, there was a real buzz in the Great Hall.
