Ned Wildgoose-Bulloch: commended in Spanish poetry translation

I enjoyed the chance of combining knowledge of Spanish with creative choices in this competition. Out of the possible texts, Spanish Level 4 felt right because I like writing poems and the challenge of the piece gave me decisions to make. There were ambiguous phrases in Spanish that wouldn’t retain the same variety of meanings in English. “almuerza” could be translated as an instruction (“feed”) or as a description (“it feeds”). When I initially considered it as a description, I also adapted it to “fed” because I felt it carried the key meaning whilst sounding better. Eventually I switched it to an imperative to match the other instructions in the poem.
