Economics Society discusses climate change

Yesterday, 50 economists met on Teams to hear an innovative and controversial solution to the climate crisis, posed by American expert, Ted Halstead. In a fascinating lecture, Ted laid out his vision for a ‘Republican climate solution where everyone wins’. The thought provoking talk promoted much discussion, in particular the suggestion of a climate dividend where funds raised from higher carbon taxes are redistributed amongst the working population. Ted’s team estimated that the bottom 70% of US households would be net beneficiaries. Furthermore, it was suggested that there could be stricter environmental regulation on imports, thus incentivising other nations to follow suit. The society was divided as to whether this would be a viable option, but most were in agreement that more could be done. Well done to all who attended for your excellent contributions and discussion.
