Pastoral Care

“The very high level of professional and caring support offered by housemasters is further enhanced by an excellent and natural rapport with those in their care. They know individual boarders extremely well, and the houses have an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect”
ISI Inspection Report 2015

The welfare of our boarders is paramount, and we have a team of staff who are dedicated to just that.

A number of academic staff support the Housemaster in his role. The resident tutors and visiting tutors play a major part in the smooth running of the house.

Each boarding house has a matron. Her responsibilities are wide: she cares for the health and wellbeing of pupils, manages the cleaning of the houses and the laundry, and is very much the person to whom boys can turn in the event of problems or just a friendly chat. They are a key part of our boarding team.

The on-site Medical Centre has a team of qualified nursing staff ensuring that the boarding community has access to advice, care and support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A doctor visits each weekday to see those that need further medical advice. Each boarding house has resident members of staff who are First Aid trained. Dulwich College offers a confidential counselling service to pupils. An experienced and well qualified counsellor is available, via the Medical Centre, for one to one appointments throughout the year.

Food is an important part of any teenager’s life, and our boarders eat together for breakfast and supper, and with the rest of the school community at lunch. Breakfast includes fruit, cereal, toast and a number of cooked options, while supper includes soup, three choices of main course including at least one vegetarian option, and a salad bar, choices of dessert including fruit and yogurt. Special diets can be catered for, and the Boarders’ Catering Committee meets regularly to ensure that student requests can be taken into account. Additionally, boarding houses are stocked with essential items, such as bread, milk, cereal and fruit.
