Creative Arts

Creative thinking is part of the Dulwich DNA. It is no accident that our first school-wide Free Learning Day was Dulwich Creative. The new Laboratory initiative has at its heart Renaissance thinking associated with the collaboration between the Sciences and the Arts.

A broad education in the arts helps give children a better understanding of their world…We need students who are culturally literate as well as math and science literate. Paul Ostergard | Vice President, Citicorp

We are not primarily in the business of training ‘Artists’, but in educating young people to be visually literate, confident enough to express themselves and to explore, understand and appraise the world around them, through the medium of Art and Design. We aim to develop cultured young people who will appreciate the importance of Art and Design in the world they live and work in.

In our teaching we must also aim to provide opportunities to foster that sense of wonder and curiosity which leads students to make links and understand relationships in all they see.

Igniting, inventing and imagining drives every Dulwich boy and the creative arts here at Dulwich afford boys the opportunity to excel. In addition to curating major exhibitions of boys work throughout the school, the Art department enjoys visionary collaborations with major British artists. The Music department showcases the extraordinary talents of its instrumentalists and choral scholars in major concerts within school and National concert halls including the Festival Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Kings College Cambridge.  The Edward Alleyn Theatre has become a crucible for producing fearless original work of the highest dramatic order. Productions have been staged at the Sam Wanamaker playhouse at the Globe Theatre and boys regularly perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
