Music

Music is an integral part to the life of a Dulwich student. As an academic subject, Music seeks to engage students in the disciplines of performance, composition, and appraising. We encourage a life-long love and passion for the subject through learning about, and performing, a wide range of styles, genres and composers.

What we teach

Music is studied by all students in Year 7, 8 and 9 where the rudiments of music are learnt through a wide range of activity-based projects featuring both traditional musical study as well as skills-based training in score writing and sequencing using Dorico and Logic Pro. Students opt to study Music for GCSE and A Level where we follow the Edexcel courses, providing the opportunity for advanced study in the subject as well as excellent preparation for higher education. As part of the A level, students can study a Remix module and receive specialist Music Technology teaching at the College.

Enrichment

In support of our work in the classroom there are a wide range of enrichment opportunities for students to foster their love for Music. We have a variety of trips to live concerts in, and around London as well as workshops at the College and joint with other SSLP schools. We are privileged to have our composition programme supported by the College’s Visiting Composer Cecilia McDowall, and our Music Technologist, Isa Khan, who both provide one-to-one composition supervision for our GCSE and A level students. Performance skills are nurtured by a wide range of co-curricular ensembles and by masterclasses with professional players.

Destinations

Many students continue to study Music beyond Dulwich at a variety of prestigious universities and conservatoires. Recent destinations have included the Music and Sound Recording degree (Tonmeister) at the University of Surrey as well as the Universities of Oxford, Manchester and Royal Holloway. Conservatoire destinations have included the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Royal Welsh College of Music.
