Biology
Biology at Dulwich is a dynamic, inquiry‑led discipline. We inspire students to explore the marvels of life—from molecular processes to whole ecosystems—cultivating scientific curiosity, analytical thinking, and real‑world problem-solving.
What we teach
Students follow a specialist Biology pathway within our Science curriculum:
- IGCSE (Years 9–11): Pupils begin studying Edexcel IGCSE Biology in Year 9. The course provides a strong grounding in topics such as cell biology, systems physiology, genetics, ecology, and evolution. Lessons are taught in specialist laboratories and are rich in practical work, encouraging students to apply their learning through experimentation and analysis.
- A Level (Years 12–13): In the Sixth Form, students pursue Biology through the Cambridge International (CAIE) A Level. The course develops advanced subject knowledge and key skills in experimental design, data evaluation, and critical thinking. Topics include biochemistry, biodiversity, disease, immunology, and environmental biology. The curriculum is designed to support progression to competitive STEM courses at university.
Enrichment
We offer a broad programme of enrichment opportunities to deepen biological insight:
- Field Courses: A Level students take part in fieldwork at specialist centres, reinforcing key ecological principles, research techniques and statistical analysis
- Scientific Competitions: Students regularly participate in national competitions such as the Biology Challenge and Biology Olympiad. These stretch able learners and support academic extension.
- Co‑curricular Clubs: A range of clubs—including BioMedSoc and the Biology Breakfast Club—offer opportunities for further exploration and teamwork outside the classroom.
- Independent Research: Sixth Formers can undertake Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs) or equivalent biology-focused research projects, developing their scientific inquiry and communication skills.
Destinations
Biology at Dulwich prepares students for outstanding academic and professional futures:
- Higher Education: Our students go on to study Biology, Medicine, Biomedical Science, Natural Sciences, and related fields at top UK and international universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and Russell Group institutions.
- Careers: Alumni pursue careers in medicine, research, biotechnology, conservation, healthcare, and science education.
- Skills Development: Through the study of Biology, students gain analytical, practical, and critical thinking skills that are highly valued in both academic and professional contexts.
