OAs in South Africa meet touring rugby squad

OAs in South Africa caught up with the Dulwich College touring rugby squad at Diocesan College (Bishops) in July.

It was a lovely occasion. The Dulwich pupils and coaches were so well presented and behaved. They cleaned up behind themselves, and gave official Dulwich tour ties to the Bishops representatives, which was deeply appreciated.

This professional and exemplary organisational culture was reflected in their style of play on the field. The pupils defended with courage, especially in the midfield, where the Heatlie XV (Bishops representative side) man-of-the-match attacked relentlessly. Dulwich responded with flair, and ran the ball wide with entertaining skills. The half-time score was deservedly 15 - 0 in the Dulwich favour. The second half saw Dulwich play into the renowned Cape Town south-easter wind, which had been escalating all afternoon. Despite the natural elements, and the long grass on the famous Piley Rees field, Dulwich displayed true grit and hung on strong for a memorable 18 - 15 victory!

At the post-match function complements were exchanged. Dulwich head coach Joe Quin spoke elegantly, and Captain of School, Daniel O'Connell, led the players in song.

Old Alleynian WP van Zyl (96 - 96) spoke on the historic relevance of the occasion; highlighted significant links between Dulwich College and Bishops; and encouraged the visitors to view Bishops not as a destination, but rather as a home away from home.

Ed Durrant (94 - 94) was also present, wearing his DC tie with much joy.

Some Dulwich memorabilia were on display, including historical books about Dulwich College; Sir Ernest Shackleton books; and a large aerial picture of the Dulwich main school buildings.

This was a wonderful occasion for OA's to connect with their old school, and the pupils really seemed to enjoy seeing the OA network in action.

All-in-all a memorable Dulwich College, Diocesan College, and Old Alleynian celebration.
