This annual event takes place near Kingston on Thames on the edge of the common but is largely in woodlands not heathland. The threatened rain held off as the record field of 280 runners representing 38 alumni teams from across the country took on the challenging five mile course over Wimbledon Common.
The OA turn out was the best in recent years with seven athletes taking to the start line. Our top finisher in 47th was Tom South who turned down the opportunity to run for his ‘other’ Dulwich club in the South of the Thames Championships to take part. Close behind and tightly bunched were team captain Jerry Watson (74th), Steve Georgiadis (75th) and Mike Burton (79th) whose combined scores were enough for us to retain the Chris Chataway Cup for Over 50s. Rob Rider (115), Dan Wade (129) and Mark Hutchings (211) completed our team and with Tom placing as high as he did we also placed third in the Over 40s event.
Great credit must go to Mike (who last competed in this race over 35 years ago) and Rob, who had travelled from Armagh in Northern Ireland and Berlin respectively to take part.
The race next year looks as though it will be on 15 December. Put the date in your diary and make it your New Year’s resolution to get fit.
