Zooey Gleaves - OA Story

Zooey Gleaves/Lagoon Femshayma is a host, DJ and broadcaster from South London. He currently has shows on REPREZENT and Foundation FM, as well as regularly contributing to Dazed Beauty and working with Dazed, AnOther, i-D and 10. He is also Head of Fashion and Beauty for ISSTUDIO.

Zooey left Dulwich College in 2013 and went on to study History of Art at the University of Bristol before starting his career in fashion as an assistant stylist. He talks candidly about the difficulties he encountered after coming out as gay shortly after starting at the College, but he reflects incredibly positively on the more inclusive atmosphere created by the current Master, Dr Joe Spence. Zooey goes on to talk about his first job in fashion, which was not all plain sailing! His advice to LGBT pupils currently at the College is insightful and there is much to be taken from it, regardless of sexuality, gender and background.

This interview took place within the context of DC IAM Here and LGBT+ History Month and was carried out by our Head of Geography and Teacher Lead for the LGBT Society, Dr Cyrus Nayeri. It formed part of the I AM Library, an initiative modelled on The Human Library movement, which aims to address prejudices by allowing people to talk to those they would not normally through a library analogy of lending people rather than books.
