Mathematics

Mathematics is an integral part of learning at Dulwich College. All pupils have a 55-minute Mathematics lesson each day. In Years 3, 4 and 5, lessons are taught in mixed-attainment form groups, while in Years 6 pupils are taught in four smaller classes based on attainment.

Our aim is to develop confident, fluent mathematicians who enjoy exploring the subject. Lessons are stimulating and inspiring, using a range of approaches including practical manipulatives, pictorial methods, and problem-solving activities, ensuring that the needs of both the class and individual pupils are met at every level.

Curriculum and Resources

Our core scheme of learning follows the National Curriculum through the highly respected White Rose Maths Schemes of Learning, supplemented by additional resources to support, extend, and enrich learning. As a result, pupils are generally working a year ahead of the national expectation.

Mathematical language is developed throughout the Junior School and boys are taught to estimate and check their working. Practical work, investigations, reasoning and problem solving activities are integrated at all levels and are at the heart of Mathematics teaching.

Mathematical Enrichment

In each year group, pupils have the opportunity to stretch their mathematical knowledge through participating in national maths challenges. In Years 3 and 4, all pupils take on the First Maths Challenge in the Summer Term. In Years 5 and 6, pupils enjoy the Primary Maths Challenge as well as the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge, with many students progressing to bonus rounds each year.
