English

The study of English has always been central to a Dulwich College education and remains at the heart of the Junior School curriculum. Pupils in Years 3 to 6 have 55 minutes of English daily, complemented by additional reading and library sessions.

Our aim is to cultivate a lifelong love of English through reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a stimulating, engaging, and enjoyable context. While the programme of study follows the National Curriculum, many pupils work at a level beyond the expectations for their age group. By the end of Year 5, pupils begin to prepare for the College 11+ examination, held in December of their final Junior School year. By the time pupils progress to Year 7, they are confident and capable readers and writers.

Reading

Pupils are encouraged to become enthusiastic, independent, and reflective readers. As they move through the school, they explore an increasingly wide variety of literary texts and enrichment activities. Each class benefits from a regular library lesson, supported by our school Librarian who inspires and encourages pupils in all aspects of reading. Pupils are expected to read independently both at school and at home, and may borrow from our extensive collection of books on any school day. Additional activities, including book clubs, storytelling sessions, visits by authors, and our annual Book Week, further promote a love of reading.

Writing

Throughout their time in the Junior School, pupils have opportunities to write across a wide range of subjects. The curriculum nurtures creativity and imagination while providing diverse stimulus material, including children’s literature, poetry, film, and art. Regular theatre visits and workshops, such as the annual visit from The Young Shakespeare Company, support pupils’ learning and introduce them to Shakespeare through lively performance workshops. Writing allows pupils to express themselves while developing key skills for organising and communicating ideas. Constructive feedback provides encouragement and guidance, while grammar, spelling, and punctuation form a solid foundation for all written work. Pupils are also supported in developing a neat, legible handwriting style as a standard expectation.

Speaking and Listening

Pupils are encouraged to express themselves clearly and to evaluate the ideas of others through a variety of activities, including class discussions, assemblies, personal talks, debates, outings, visiting speakers, and drama. During their time in the Junior School, pupils are expected to talk, listen, and respond appropriately with increasing confidence. Opportunities to speak and perform to larger audiences, such as in assemblies, plays and House Competitions, help pupils develop confidence and clarity when speaking.
