Sport

With 70 acres of grounds, a PE centre, tennis courts, squash courts, a swimming pool and even a boat-house on the Thames, it’s not surprising that Dulwich College is notable for its sports provision.

The Junior School allocates a generous amount of time to sports, allowing the boys to engage in a wide variety of pursuits. Many of the College’s specialist coaches are closely involved with the development of the programme within the Junior School. Years 3 and 4 have one Games lessons per week and Years 5 and 6 have two. Each year group is led by a team of specialists. In addition to the time-tabled sessions, there are numerous opportunities for co-curricular activities taking full advantage of the superb facilities offered by the College.

We believe that each boy should have the opportunity to experience a range of different activities, played in a competitive, enjoyable atmosphere which seeks to encourage good sportsmanship and a healthier lifestyle through physical activity.

In the Michaelmas term, all boys are taught football, hockey and swimming. In the Lent term, they concentrate on rugby. In the Summer term, they take up cricket and athletics. Although we actively coach the most able of our sportsmen to develop their full potential, our aim in the Junior School is that all boys participate in and enjoy sport at their own level. In our many competitive fixtures against other schools we field a number of teams at various levels of ability so that all boys, not just the best, are given the opportunity to represent their school. Sport contributes significantly to the boys’ overall wellbeing in terms of physical fitness, their ability to work in a team and their capacity to deal with success and failure with equal good grace.

Although boys may bring their own sports equipment, the College will provide everything needed to participate in these sports.

In every year group there are many opportunities for all boys to compete in matches against other schools in all of the major sports. Boys are also entered for local and national competitions and have enjoyed numerous triumphs in rugby, hockey, football, cricket and swimming.
