The Laboratory

“The whole Laboratory project has had a re-invigorating effect on all Science departments and has raised the status of Science within the College - and beyond. In addition to benefits to the College community, our enhanced facilities will allow us to provide more enrichment activities with local schools.”Dulwich Science teacher

The Laboratory is central to the life of the College. This outstanding new building has been designed to support and celebrate the importance of Science and Art at the College, while complementing the scale, proportion and colours of the adjacent Barry Building.

Grimshaw Architects have ensured that the new design responds specifically to the needs of ‘good learning’ in Science for the 21st century. Phase 1 of The Laboratory, which opened in April 2015, has 18 superb new labs and the James Caird Hall, an exhibition space and home to Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lifeboat, James Caird, currently celebrating the centenary of her epic voyage. The College’s commitment to breaking down the false divide between Science and Art is reflected both inside and out: the design of The Laboratory’s exterior panels, by sculptor Peter Randall-Page RA, was derived from the Lindenmayer system and an imposing sculpture, Exploded Paradigm (Inverted) designed by Conrad Shawcross RA, in collaboration with a dozen of our A level artists and scientists, fills the atrium. Phase 2 of the new building was completed in June 2016, delivering a further three labs for Junior and Lower School Science, five Informatics Suites, as well as a much needed 240 seat multi-use auditorium for the College and wider community.

The building is conceived as a true laboratory: where boys can embark on their own adventures in learning, and where Science and Art are brought to life and shared globally through experiment, creative thinking and inspirational teaching.
