Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide both breadth and depth and give the boys in the Junior School a stimulating, challenging, learning experience. While we place a great emphasis on the core subjects to ensure boys achieve the highest standards possible we balance this with creative, physical and investigative learning for all. All pupils have opportunities for free and deep learning through research and project work and philosophy. The pupils’ education is enhanced further with opportunities for learning outside and beyond the classroom through our free learning weeks, the Junior symposium and our comprehensive programme of co-curricular activities.

In Years 3 and 4 the boys receive much of their teaching in academic subjects from their form tutors. As the boys move through the Junior School they are taught by a growing number of subject specialist staff. Year 6 is organized as a transitional year with the children encountering a greater number of staff in preparation for Year 7. All our pupils are taught by subject specialist staff for French, Art, Design Technology, Music, P.E. swimming and Games. In Year 3 all boys are taught a stringed instrument in our Strings Scheme and in Year 4 all boys are taught a brass or woodwind instrument. Form tutors remain key figures both academically and pastorally throughout the Junior School playing an essential role in the ‘holistic’ education that we offer.

Beyond the Junior School

Our expectation is that all parents will want their sons to continue into the Lower School (Years 7 and 8). We therefore prepare the boys for the same examination that will be taken by external applicants in the January of their final year with us. Following a satisfactory performance in that examination, Junior School boys are expected to transfer smoothly to Year 7.
