Year 1 study Ernest Shackleton

Year 1 made a trip to the College this week as part of their ‘Blue Plaque’ project. They have been learning about the life of Ernest Shackleton which has sparked a lot of interest and questions so they took their research to the next level and walked to the College to see various artefacts and to learn more about Shackleton’s life and his voyages of exploration. The children explored the large painting of Discovery (Shackleton’s first trip to the Antarctic); saw a painting of the James Caird; saw the original sail from the James Caird, a portrait of Shackleton, an original balaclava belonging to the Endurance’s doctor, some replica clothing the men would have worn and photographs of the Endurance trip. The highlight was seeing the James Caird itself and meeting an Antarctic penguin called Bill.
