The Master visits DUCKS to give assembly on his expedition to Antarctica

On Thursday 23 March DUCKS was delighted to welcome The Master of Dulwich College, Dr Joseph Spence and his wife Mrs Angela Spence. They told the story of OA Sir Earnest Shackelton's journey to Antarctica and their own recent expedition to Antarctica where they were joined by Shackleton’s great grandson.

The children learnt about the expedition flag, specialist clothing including bright red jackets with bar tags, tales of mattresses and beds overturning in the rough seas, and penguins returning to their nests from the sea. They saw ice walls collapsing, plastic floating in the ocean, and Mrs Spence talked about how seaweed shows signs of environmental changes.

Dr Spence talked about how he was grateful to have had the time to write while free of Wi-Fi, and recited one of his poems. The Year 2 children were interested to learn about the Happywhale charity and the Spences’ support of a whale they had named Questing Pintado. The whaler’s church at Grytviken gave Dr Spence the opportunity to speak to a group of explorers.

Pupils (and staff) greatly enjoyed the engaging presentation which gave the children much to think about and prompted a host of questions.
