Candy Gourlay is the author of over 10 books for children, and best known for exploring themes of family, separation and identity. Tall Story, about a giant boy, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal, the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, the Blue Peter Book Award, and the Branford Boase Prize. Her second book, Shine, about an isolated teenager, was shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Book Prize. Her third novel, Bone Talk, set in the Philippines on the brink of the US invasion, was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and the Costa Book Award.
The workshop for Years 1 and 2 was high energy and full of fun. The children learnt how to become a writer and Candy read her book, Is it a Mermaid? a diverse story that taught them about dugongs, marine mammals, and reminded them that they can be anything they want to be. There was hilarity, drawing and a magic fish bag.
Pupils found the workshop funny, relatable, and inspiring, and left ready to read and write...including thank you letters.
