Science Week at DUCKS

Science Week at DUCKS

It has been a glorious week of scientific exploration in Year 2 at DUCKS. Every year, the Infants’ School has a special focus on the subject, inspiring awe, wonder and a love of Science in our children.

The week began with an assembly lead by Mrs Sym, Head of Physics at Dulwich College. She spoke beautifully about the nature of curiosity and the importance of asking questions about the world around us.

On Tuesday, children took part in a carousel of experiments in classrooms around the school, ranging from creating slime, to electrical torch-making, to the ‘magic’ of chromatography.

Wednesday saw Dulwich College chemistry teachers Mr Geach, Mr Willets and their team, put on a fantastic outdoor display. This included demonstrating the use of carbon dioxide, burning ethanol and melting iron. The children particularly loved the 'elephant toothpaste' and ping pong ball explosion.

On Thursday, Year 2 children went to visit the Science Labs in Dulwich College to take part in a range of experiments across all three scientific disciplines. In Biology, they experimented with different ‘beaks’ to see how many seeds and beans they could pick up; in Physics, they learnt about the properties of nitrogen and how it changes from a liquid to a gas at different temperatures; in Chemistry, they made exploding ‘rockets’ using a build-up of carbon dioxide in film canisters.

It has been a week of ‘wow’ moments and a wonderful opportunity for DUCKS to take advantage of the resources generously provided by the Dulwich College science department.
