Learning Beyond the Classroom: Year 1 Take Inspiration from Dulwich Picture Gallery
This week, our Year 1 children enjoyed a memorable and inspiring visit to Dulwich Picture Gallery, bringing their classroom learning to life through art, conversation and creativity.
As part of their Science learning about nature, and in line with our strong cross-curricular approach, the children visited the gallery to take part in a specialist workshop led by the gallery’s local Artist in Residence. The visit provided a wonderful opportunity to connect scientific observation with artistic expression in a rich, real-world setting.
During their time in the gallery, the children explored a range of artworks, focusing particularly on nature themed art. They looked closely at colours, shapes and expressions, and engaged in thoughtful discussions about how the artworks made them feel, think and wonder. These conversations encouraged curiosity, emotional literacy and reflective thinking.
The experience continued in the Art Studio, where the children created their own nature-themed artworks, inspired by what they had seen around the gallery. Using a variety of materials and techniques, they expressed their ideas creatively, developing both their artistic skills and their confidence as young artists.
At DUCKS, we firmly believe in making the most of the wonderful local area we are part of, providing rich learning opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Visits like this reflect our commitment to broadening children’s experiences, nurturing creativity and ensuring learning is purposeful, joyful and connected to the world around them.
