In Conversation with Mr Tanna, Mrs John-Baptiste, Mr Faiers and Mrs Doherty

In Conversation with Mr Tanna, Mrs John-Baptiste, Mr Faiers and Mrs Doherty

It is no secret that our teachers are what make the learning experience at Dulwich College so distinct.

Four of our teachers came together to talk to each other about what inspired them to get into teaching, their passion for their subjects, the realities and highlights of the job, and why Dulwich is such a special place to teach.

“It is a hard place to leave”, says Mrs Doherty, who has been with us for 22 years. Accepting that “teachers don’t always know everything” and showing resilience, humility and adaptability when things do not go as expected have been at the centre of her remarkable teaching career.

For Mr Faiers, being able to combine his passions (such as basketball), along with his role as a Mathematics teacher brings his immense joy. Along with Mrs John-Baptiste, he strives to break down barriers in Mathematics and make it a more enjoyable subject for everyone.

Mrs John-Baptiste, on her side, finds it extremely rewarding teaching lower set groups and seeking “the missing piece of the puzzle.” “Everybody has a strength: you’ve just got to (find) it.”

Mr Tanna spoke about how much the school has changed over the years. For him, it is now a more accessible place where a lot of teaching is done outside the classrooms. Getting to know the children personally and offering unconditional support to them have always been both his passion and priority.

All four teachers agreed that while teaching has its highs and lows, students bring out the best in them.  They hope that, as teachers, they bring out the best in their students too!
