Harvest of Hearts: DUCKS Children Embrace Selflessness for Southwark Food Bank

Harvest of Hearts: DUCKS Children Embrace Selflessness for Southwark Food Bank

This week, the children at DUCKS demonstrated the true spirit of community and generosity by successfully completing their annual Harvest Food Collection, donating a remarkable haul of essential goods to the Southwark Food Bank. As part of the school's Harvest celebrations, the pupils eagerly embraced the challenge of being "Selfless Ducks," preparing for the event at home by decorating a box and filling it with essential items specifically requested by the Southwark Food Bank.

The collected items were delivered directly to the Southwark Food Bank, an organisation that provides emergency food parcels to local people in crisis who are struggling to afford the basics. Their efforts ensure that families and individuals facing hardship across the borough receive vital support. The collection culminated in a special event, where the school's Year 2 Charity and Service Leaders played a pivotal role. The young leaders were on hand to accept the incoming donations from their fellow pupils and efficiently helped pack the items into the larger food boxes. Their enthusiasm and dedication ensured the smooth running of the collection point.

The day was supported by a special assembly featuring a member of the Southwark Food Bank team, who shared insights into the food bank's vital work and the direct impact of the children's generosity. The College's Reverend Tim also addressed the school, speaking about the importance of spreading love, showing compassion, and connecting with the needs of the wider community.

Opportunities like this reinforce our school’s core values that drive learning every day. The event served as a powerful reminder that while academic success and achievements are important, developing the whole child and cultivating a care for the world around them is key to fostering future responsible and compassionate citizens.
