At DUCKS, one of our core aims is to provide rich opportunities for our pupils to explore a wide range of learning environments, both indoors and outdoors, helping them grow in confidence and curiosity. This term, that aim came to life through a variety of local trips and hands‑on experiences, including a memorable visit to the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Both Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed an inspiring trip to the gallery, where they were able to bring their classroom learning to life through art, conversation and creativity. As part of their Science work on nature and in keeping with our strong cross‑curricular approach, the children took part in a specialist workshop led by the gallery’s Artist in Residence. This experience offered a wonderful opportunity to connect scientific observation with artistic expression in a meaningful, real-world setting.
During their time in the gallery, the children explored a range of artworks, focusing particularly on pieces inspired by the natural world. They looked closely at colours, shapes and expressions, and engaged in thoughtful discussions about how the artworks made them think, feel and wonder.
These conversations nurtured curiosity, emotional literacy and reflective thinking. The creative journey continued in the Art Studio, where the children produced their own nature‑themed artworks as well as the gallery gardens where children created art work using leaves and outdoor resources.
At DUCKS, we are proud to make the most of the wonderful local area we are part of, ensuring that learning is purposeful, joyful and deeply connected to the world around us. Experiences like these broaden children’s horizons, nurture creativity and enrich their understanding of both art and nature.
