2026 Neurodiversity Celebration Week

2026 Neurodiversity Celebration Week

This week, we are marking Neurodiversity Celebration Week at the College, a global initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences.

Neurodiversity vs Neurodivergence

Neurodiversity refers to a world where neurological differences are recognised and respected as all other human variations. Depending on how our brains are wired we think, move, process information and communicate in different ways.

Neurodivergence is an umbrella term used to describe alternative thinking styles such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD.

Approximately 15-20% of the population has a neurological difference.

Supporting our students at Dulwich College

At Dulwich College, staff across all five schools work together to ensure learners are recognised, supported, and valued.

As a community, we recognise that many neurodivergent thinkers demonstrate exceptional creativity, innovative problem‑solving, and unique perspectives. We value neurodiversity and celebrate the many ways our pupils think and thrive.

Our Learning Support Department works with teaching staff to support them in understanding each child’s unique learning profile. Individual students may access additional intervention to support their specific needs.

How and why we are marking neurodiversity week this year

Across the college we will be celebrating neurodiversity week with a range of student activities, information sessions and celebrations.

Our children at DUCKS will be looking at how everyone's brains are different (we are all neurodiverse!) and how this impacts us. We will be reading books about neurodiversity to them and creating brain artworks to show our unique brains.

KS1 will have an assembly where they will talk about neurodivergence and different needs the children may have heard of. They will also be playing games that encourage conversations about neurodiversity in class.

In the junior school, our EDI Ambassadors will lead a launch assembly , sharing a film they created together with some of our neurodivergent pupils about their strengths and challenges. Together with wellbeing lessons throughout the week, this will help build awareness and understanding about neurodiversity and neurodivergence. Pupils will also have the chance to take part in a range of breaktime activities to celebrate difference and share experiences.

In the lower, middle and senior schools, assemblies and tutor times will focus on understanding, valuing and celebrating the talents of neurodiverse minds. To celebrate our neurodivergent thinking, students have been invited to showcase their areas of interest.

Dr Jenna Vyes-Lee, Clinical Psychologist, specialising in neurodevelopmental conditions, parenting, and child mental health. Dr Vyas-Lee will deliver  a parent webinar sharing her expertise on child development, neurodivergence and how to support children at home.
