Maths, Science and Modern Foreign Languages

Academic departments at Dulwich College are part of a variety of continuing educ ational partnership programmes which as part of our educational mission include providing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to teachers.

A five-week series of classes for 15 Year 11 students from the Elmgreen School in Tulse Hill, focusing on improving the understanding of students currently at B grade level.

The science faculty at Dulwich is keen to share its teaching expertise to both teachers and pupils alike in the provision of weekly enrichment sessions for pupils and termly CPD sessions to teachers.

This has been focused on supporting non-specialist Physics teachers by means of twice-termly Physics CPD events at Dulwich with the Institute of Physics. Our Physics teachers are also used as trainers for the educational charity Physics Partners which visits schools across London. In the last year we have provided coaching sessions and facilities for Elmgreen School, Virgo Fidelis, Haberdashers’ Askes’s Hatcham College, St Mary Magdalene Academy and the Harris Academy group.

Lessons for gifted and talented students in Year 9, 10 and 11 at Bonus Pastor Catholic College in Bromley engage in enrichment sessions in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Collaboration with the Ogden Trust Scholarship Scheme has encouraged boys to study Physics at Dulwich College in the Sixth Form – the most recent Scholar started his A levels in September 2016.

  • There are Physics and Chemistry practicals and Biology trips to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in support of start-up
  • A levels at St. Thomas the Apostle College, Peckham. A provision of INSET training sessions for maintained sector Physics and non-specialist Physics teachers across London and provision of teachers in support of the educational charity Physics Partners
  • Dulwich joins a summer school at CERN run by the Particle Physics Department at Liverpool University and we extend the applications to schools in the Southwark Schools Learning Partnership (SSLP). This year 15 pupils from this group of schools now join the Liverpool team for a week of summer school at the CMS Experiment at CERN in Geneva
  • We are host of the Lambeth and Southwark Medical Challenge Day (March 2017) for Year 10 and 11 girls and boys who have an interest in possible careers in Medicine (

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Dulwich has always sought to work with others to develop the learning of languages. We instigated the teaching of German in schools, promoted the teaching of Arabic and in the darker times of the Second War pulled together talented linguists far afield to learn Japanese.

Today we are working with Southwark schools through collaboration with the Jules Verne scheme, the Confucius Institute for Business London, SOAS and the British Council, facilitating a language teacher for St. Saviour’s and St. Olave’s School and Michael Faraday School, a Chinese teacher for two classes at Kingsdale Foundation School and a Mandarin club at Dulwich Wood Primary School and Arabic teaching for students at The Charter School.

In addition, we

  • Host for the annual LInguafest ‘Science in a Modern Language' for pupils and teachers from SSLP schools, City Heights, JAGS and Dulwich College
  • Source and administer 1,000+ hours of Spanish language oral support for SSLP schools through the placing of PGCE graduates from the Universidad Católica de Valencia
  • Host Chinese Business Day for Year 10 pupils from local schools
At a teacher level we play a significant role in the Association of Languages London branch. The association numbers some 2,000 members and as in previous years we have organised conferences, CPD, resource sharing and webinars.

At a national level we have continued our work, started in 2009, to ensure the fair grading of modern language examinations. We are also considering ways to redress the national shortage of language teachers through launching an MFL SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) in September 2017.
