The Halford Hewitt competition was founded in 1925. Teams of ten players from sixty four schools play a foursomes knockout competition off scratch over four days. The first two rounds are shared between the Royal Cinque Ports (Deal) and Royal St. George’s (Sandwich) courses, with the final rounds being played at Deal.
There is also a plate competition at Prince’s Golf Club for those teams knocked out in the first or second round.
Dulwich have not yet won the Cup, but reached the final in 1982, when we lost narrowly to Charterhouse, as well as semi-finals and quarter-finals. The Dulwich side is one of the best supported, and all Old Alleynians who come to support the side will be most welcome.
Over the years several of the great names in amateur golf have played in the Halford Hewitt. Dulwich’s most famous golfer, Peter Oosterhuis, unfortunately only played for us once before turning professional. Bob Deakin created a remarkable record in playing in over 50 consecutive years and in over 100 individual matches. Mike Kirby also reached the milestone of 100 matches.
