The Old Alleynian Golfing Society
The Old Alleynian Golfing Society was founded in 1925. It exists to promote the enjoyment of golf by Old Alleynians. To do this the Society has a varied and attractive fixture list.
It enters teams for the national competitions for public schools old boys golf societies:
- the Halford Hewitt Cup which is played at Deal and Sandwich in April
- the Grafton Morrish Bowl, the finals of which are held at Hunstanton and Brancaster in the Autumn
- the Cyril Gray Trophy, played at Worplesdon in June
- the Putting Tournament held at Royal Wimbledon in June
Details of these competitions can be found here.
The Society holds two formal Meetings, and organises several informal ones, during the year. These are played at some of the best golfing venues in the South East of England, which can be checked out on the Meetings page. The Spring and Autumn Meetings include a singles stableford competition in the morning with a foursomes competition after lunch. There is also a Scratch prize in the Autumn Meeting, and one for the best singles aggregate over the two meetings. The informal Winter Warmers and Summer Sizzlers consist of a breakfast or light lunch followed by a round of golf. Members wishing to play in any of these events should contact the Hon. Secretary, Graham Curtis.
There are also a number of friendly matches against Dulwich College, the Dulwich and Sydenham Hill and Royal Cinque Ports Golf Clubs, and other Old Boys Golf Societies. These are held either in the evening during the week, or at the weekend. Details can be found on the Dates and Events page. Any member wishing to play in any match should contact the appropriate Match Manager
The Society holds its Annual Dinner in March at the East India Club. The Annual General Meeting is held immediately following the Autumn Meeting.
The Committee are concerned to maintain the sustainability and vitality of the Society. Members are encouraged to attend the Meetings and to play in the matches. The Society has also established a Youth Policy to encourage recent school leavers to join and participate in the events. But we also want to encourage any other OAs who play golf, whether returning to the game or having taken it up since leaving the College, to join us. Don’t worry about your standard of play. Whatever it is you will be given a warm welcome. Membership costs only £20 per year, but for members under 25 years old it is free.
