On Friday 22 June, Billy Gammon, invited to the College by Mr Lock, addressed an assembly for Years 9 and 10 boys.
Billy was a member of the first ever crew to reach the 1996 position of the Magnetic North Pole in 2011 by row boat - www.rowtothepole.com. He regaled the boys with stories from their epic adventure of encounters with icebergs, polar bears and all sorts of nautical nightmares. The audience of staff and boys were captivated throughout, and particularly enjoyed the references to Ernest Shackleton OA and the striking similarities between the two expeditions despite the c.100 year time difference.
The four boys who achieved the highest marks in the recent Year 9 Geography examination were awarded signed copies of the book ‘Furthest North’, which encapsulates the crew’s journey.
