25 boys were part of a 100-strong company of actors, musicians and crew who staged an extraordinary production of ‘Sweeney Todd’ last week. Laced with characteristically brilliant wit and dark humour, Sondheim’s original and remarkable score tells of Sweeney Todd's return to London after years of false imprisonment, and his savage quest for justice and retribution. Aided and abetted by the pie-shop owner, Mrs Lovett, he sets out to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family many years before. The boys conjured the characters in the Victorian underworld with exuberance and comic menace and created a highly visual evocative ensemble. This was an exceptional and compelling version of Sondheim’s musical of corruption and revenge, performed in true Grand Guignol style. Congratulations to all boys; cast, crew and musicians who were involved.
