The beautiful setting of Southwark Cathedral provided the perfect backdrop to the Summer Concert on Monday evening. The College’s musicians captivated their audience with a programme including music by Gordon Langford, Eric Coates, Herbert Howells and Tchaikovsky. Three soloists from Year 13 performed: Debussy’s ‘La Fille
aux Cheveux
de Lin’ was sensitively performed by Ben Parsons on the alto saxophone and ably accompanied by the College Symphonic Wind Band; Dvorák’s ‘Romance in F Minor’ was beautifully performed by Thomas Pinsker on the violin and accompanied by the College Symphony Orchestra, and Douglas Tang gave a stirring performance of Joseph Jongen’s mighty ‘Sonata Eroica’ for solo organ. The Chapel Choir took advantage of the cathedral’s wonderful acoustic, singing ‘Thou Wilt Keep Him’ by SS Wesley and Howells’ ‘A Hymn for St Cecilia’
and the concert concluded with a rousing performance of two movements from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 2 ‘The Little Russian.
