Kit List

Boy in a waterfall

The following items are highly advisable for your visit to the Outdoor Centre. You will take part in many different activities in conditions which may be hot, cold, windy, wet, or all four! All clothes will get dirty so old items are preferable to new ones. Warm, quick-drying clothing is also more appropriate. There is a very efficient drying room and tumble drier.

Walking Kit

  • Walking boots - these should have a good tread, ankle support and be waterproof as you will be walking over rough terrain. Trainers are not permitted on any event led by BBNP staff, and never in a hill environment.
  • 2 pairs old trousers - these can be tracksuit trousers or cords but must not be denim as this fabric does not retain the heat when wet
  • Waterproofs - jacket and trousers must be able to withstand heavy rain
  • At least 2 warm shirts or sweatshirts
  • 2 t-shirts or vests
  • 2 warm jumpers - thin jumpers are best as they are more adaptable
  • 2 pairs of thick socks and 2 pairs of thin socks
  • Warm anorak or ski jacket
  • Hat (warm, covers ears), scarf and gloves. Fingerless mittens are a good idea
  • Day rucksack- any bag that can be worn over both shoulders and leaves both hands free. A plastic bag liner is also needed to keep spare clothes in since few bags are completely waterproof
