On Wednesday 18 January 2012, Simon Brett, old Alleynian author and broadcaster opened the latest exhibition from the Archive: Letters and Diaries. Simon Brett is the editor of the Faber Book of Diaries and is fascinated by the genre of diary writing. Apart from the diaries and letters from the College’s own collection there are many items on loan. Henslowe’s ‘diary’ – more an account book, of his theatrical businesses, is on display open at the entries from 20 October 1594 to 15 February 1594[5]. Edward Alleyn’s diary entry describing the dinner to celebrate the foundation of the College in 1619 is shown alongside some of his letters.

Some pages from PG Wodehouse’s Camp Note Book can be seen describing life in internment in Germany between 1940-41. There are sections on Military Conflict, Antarctic Exploration, School Life and the Musical Life of the College. The exhibition is free and is open on school days from 9am to 4.30pm. Please collect a Visitor’s Pass from Reception.
