Professor Gordon Fergus-Thompson masterclass

On Wednesday 3 May, the College celebrated its first Piano Day with four events in the Old Library. The day started with a masterclass given by international concert pianist and Royal College of Music Professor Gordon Fergus-Thompson. Nicholas Field, Darren Wei, Alex Cheung, Luca Franchi, Chyaro Hylton and Mike Humphrey had the privilege to perform for such distinguished professor who offered them invaluable musical advice. This was followed by the Junior School Concert, the first of two concerts exploring the music of Bartok, Kurtag, Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, and The Graeme Jenkins Cup, the top piano prize at Dulwich. Professor Fergus-Thompson adjudicated the competition. Darren Wei was awarded the cup for an accomplished account of Chopin’s Fantasie-Impromptu and Liem Cat was awarded a Highly Commended for a very assured performance of Montague’s Mira. The day ended with a Year 7-13 Concert and the boys were also joined on stage by all the piano faculty. Overall, this was a great celebration of piano playing and a wonderful opportunity for our pianists to discover some exciting new repertoire.
