The Lower School (Years 7 and 8) has its own building and playground in the southern part of the College campus. All 260 boys in the Lower School are encouraged to feel secure and confident in their own environment, yet they are able to make full use of some of the finest educational facilities in south London: a superb and very active theatre, fully equipped science laboratories, a large and thriving music department and excellent sports and PE facilities, as well as art studios and design and technology workshops which cater for all levels of accomplishment and expertise. The Lower School also holds the attractive and well-stocked Raymond Chandler Library, as well as its own information technology centre.
All forms in each Lower School year group follow a common curriculum which provides them with a thorough grounding in most of the subjects which are available to the boys at GCSE Level. The subjects studied are: Art, Chinese, Design and Technology, Drama, English, French or Spanish, Geography, History, Information Technology, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Well-being, Religion and Theology, Science. In addition all boys have two double periods of Games each week. All subjects are taught by specialist teachers and the emphasis is placed on acquiring and developing sound academic and organisational skills.
Boys are encouraged to try some of the many co-curricular activities which are offered. A thriving House system offers all boys the opportunity to take part in Art, Drama, Music and Debating, in addition to competing in a wide range of sporting activities. In Year 7, every form will spend a week at the College's Outdoor Centre in the Brecon Beacons, enjoying a mixture of educational and recreational activities.
