Old Alleynians

Former pupils of Dulwich College are traditionally known as Old Alleynians, in honour of our Founder, Edward Alleyn.  Amongst the most famous are of course Sir Ernest Shackleton (explorer), PG Wodehouse, Raymond Chandler and Dennis Wheatley (authors), Lord Hartley Shawcross (lawyer and politician), Lord George (former Governor of the Bank of England) and Bob Monkhouse (media personality).

Old Alleynians excel in all walks of life, however, and a large number have become, or are becoming, household names whose activities are regularly reported in the national press.

Chiwetel Ejiofor OBE (90-95), has been described as ‘the finest Othello of his generation’; Professor David Reynolds (61-70) attracted huge audiences both for his TV programmes and for his epic History of America series on BBC Radio 4; Nick Easter (91-96) and Andrew Sheridan (90-98) are both regular players in the English rugby XV and Lionel Barber (66-73) has been editor of the Financial Times since 2005. There are plenty more!

In addition, the War Memorial lists 837 names of boys and masters who gave their lives in the two World Wars while during the Battle of Britain, no fewer than ten Old Alleynians flew as fighter pilots, an exceptional number for a single school. The College also produced seven VCs, the highest military honour for bravery.

The Alleyn Club

The Alleyn Club was founded in 1873 to act as a focus for the huge and ever-expanding Old Alleynian network and is open to all OAs. There are events organised throughout the year, at the College and around the country, as well as abroad. These include Founder's Day, the OA Reunion and the Alleyn Club Dinner.

There are also opportunities to join various OA clubs and societies. These are an important part of the Alleyn Club's purpose, which includes fostering the provision of recreational, social and sporting activities for its members, strengthening their links with the College and supporting the College's educational development.

If you have lost touch with the Alleyn Club and would like to inform them about a change of address you can email: alleynclub@dulwich.org.uk or ring 020 8299 9286
