Music
Music has been a key element of education at Dulwich College since its foundation in the early 17th Century. Over the past ten years the Music Department has had a sustained period of growth and today its reputation is stronger than ever. Many gifted young musicians are attracted by the high standards, excellent facilities and the opportunity for performance of chamber, orchestral, choral music and opera at a high level.
Performances take place at leading London venues, including the Queen Elizabeth Hall and St John's Smith Square. The Department organises regular tours: the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Symphonic Wind and Big Band all spent two weeks in Salzburg, and the Chapel Choir have been invited to lead the Services throughout the country: St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin; St Paul's Cathedral; Westminster Abbey; Westminster Cathedral and Trinity College, Cambridge.
The current Music facilities include 23 teaching and rehearsal rooms, a recital room, a music technology suite and recording facilities. In addition, the Great Hall doubles as a 500-seat Concert Hall, with an attractive acoustic and Bosendorfer Imperial grand piano as well as a 4-manual organ built by Copeman Hart in 2007. A 2-manual pipe organ by Robin Jennings, a gift to the College by Professor Sir Bryan Thwaites OA, now resides in the Old Library which makes an ideal venue for small concerts and music competitions.
Music Scholarships, Choral and Organ Scholarships are available. To find out more about these and all aspects of Music at Dulwich, please contact the Music Department.
