College Rules
RESPECT FOR OTHERS
Physical violence of any type is a serious matter and will not be tolerated. If you witness any confrontation, report it to a member of staff.
Any form of bullying is unacceptable. Taunting and verbal or physical abuse, whether inside or outside the classroom, and other forms of victimisation are totally against our ethos. Always inform a member of staff if you feel you are being bullied or if you see or hear about anyone else being mistreated.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Exercise common sense when engaged in any hazardous activity and observe the particular rules which apply to laboratories, workshops, sports facilities, the theatre and other specialist teaching rooms and areas.
With the exception of boys in the Upper School, all medicines must be administered by the Medical Centre.
RESPECT FOR PROPERTY
Any deliberate damage to, or defacement, of College property is unacceptable.
Report any damage to College property without delay to your Form Tutor or to the teacher in charge of the specialist area. Whether the damage is caused by accident or your own carelessness, report it immediately. A charge may be made for any damage which is deemed to be your fault.
"Borrowing" without permission is unacceptable and could be regarded as the far more serious offence of theft.
DISCIPLINARY MATTERS
Breaking the College rules may mean you will be placed in detention. (Details about these are published by each School).
For the most serious offences (eg. theft, fighting, bullying, insolence) you may be liable to suspension or exclusion from the College.
If you are found to be in possession of, or dealing in, illegal drugs on College premises you must expect to be excluded from the College.
Do not smoke or enter any public house when wearing College uniform.
Do not bring tobacco or alcohol to the College or take them on any College activity.
Do not bring any dangerous, poisonous, flammable or explosive items onto College premises.
Do not bring offensive weapons on to College premises.
Mobile telephones and pagers must remain switched off throughout the working school day. Personal stereos must not be used during the school day.
ATTENDANCE
Prior permission from your Head of School is required for any anticipated absence.
If you are absent because of illness, a telephone call should be made to the relevant School Office on the first day of absence. Upon return to the College a letter confirming the reason for the absence should be handed to the Form Tutor from your parent(s).
If you are injured or taken ill during school hours, go to the Medical Centre. Do not go home before the end of the school day without the permission of the Medical Centre. The Medical Centre will inform the relevant School Office.
Do not leave College premises during the school day. (Special arrangements are made for boys in the Sixth Form).
During normal school hours boarders and day boys are governed by the same rules regarding bounds.
Boarding Housemasters issue separate instructions for boarders regarding bounds outside normal school hours.
COLLEGE UNIFORM
Unless special permission has been granted you must wear the correct uniform on the College premises, when attending College functions or when representing the College.
The uniform consists of:
College blazer or for the Upper School only a black single-breasted jacket
Charcoal grey trousers (not denim or cotton)
White shirt (tucked into the trousers) with a tidy collar
Vests or T-shirts should be white with no printed patterns or insignia
An approved College tie, knotted close to the collar, which must be fastened
Plain dark grey, black or navy socks
Plain black, polished, leather shoes
Dark grey, black or navy V-necked pullover or in the Upper School only, a plain grey, black or navy waistcoat
A coat of sober hue and cut with plain buttons and no insignia
A scarf in College colours.
Hats should be of a sober hue and not worn indoors.
Do not wear a scarf or coat in class, in dining halls or in Assemblies.
Do not wear jewellery, unless you have permission to do so on religious grounds.
College blazer and tie must be worn when travelling to and from the College.
Have clean shoes, your uniform correctly worn and your hair tidy: not excessively long (below collar length) or excessively short (closely shaven) and not tinted.
Beards and moustaches are only allowed where there is a well defined religious reason supported by a letter of application from parents.
CARE OF PERSONAL PROPERTY
The College can accept no responsibility for your personal property and you and your parents are advised to insure valuable items. Do not leave bags containing books, sports kit and valuables in exposed places around the College.
All personal property should be marked clearly with your name.
Do not bring to the College expensive items of personal property unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.
Keep your valuables in your personal possession. When changing for Games or PE entrust them to the relevant Site Officer.
You are advised to use the locker facilities available around the College. Special arrangements are made for the safe keeping of musical instruments in the Music Block.
Report any loss or theft as soon as possible to your Form Tutor and the appropriate School Office. Always search for anything you lose and make enquiries at the Lost Property Office.
Lost and Found is also available on the 'MyDulwich' site.
If you see visitors behaving suspiciously within the College grounds or buildings, report them without delay to a member of staff.
FOOD AND DRINK
Boys in the Junior and Lower Schools are expected to eat school lunch. Boys in the Middle and Upper Schools can obtain lunch on production of a girovend card or a lunch ticket.
Only eat and drink in a designated area and not in any classroom or while walking around the College.
GAMES AND PLAYING FIELDS
Any boy selected to represent the College in a sporting event is expected to do so unless medical or other reasons make this impossible. Parents/guardians are requested to give prior notice in writing in this situation.
Wear the appropriate games kit for all sporting activities.
Only play informal games on designated areas.
Rollerblades, skateboards and scooters may not be used on College premises.
A bell rings at 2.25 p.m. and boys must move off fields to prepare for afternoon school.
BICYCLES
If you cycle to or from the College, you are strongly advised to wear a safety helmet and a reflective outer garment, even when cycling within College grounds. You may not cycle for recreational purposes within College grounds.
You must register your bicycle with the Deputy Facilities Manager. Your swipe card will then be programmed so that you can leave your bicycle securely padlocked in the bicycle compound. You will need the frame numer of your cycle, which you should make a note of in case of loss or damage.
ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES
Please note that each School will provide a separate addition to the above which is appropriate to boys in that particular section of the College, and boarders will be prescribed separate rules by their Housemaster.
